Installing on iPhone and Android

How to add Pleno to your home screen from the browser you use, so it opens like an app (and, for council, can send notifications).

What it is

Pleno installs from the browser: there is no App Store or Play Store download. When you open Pleno in a browser on a phone or an iPad, it shows a full-screen guide with the steps for that browser. Where the browser's menu button is at an edge of the screen, an orange Start here arrow points at it.

Continue in browser (in Chrome on iPhone, Continue in Chrome) closes the guide until you close the tab.

What you can do

iPhone: Safari

Pleno installs from Safari on iPhone.

  1. Tap the More Options icon (three dots).
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add.

Then open Pleno from the new icon on your home screen. If Share is already in Safari's toolbar (iOS 18 and earlier), start at step 2.

iPhone: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other browsers

Pleno asks you to open it in Safari first, then add it from there.

  • In Chrome on iOS 17 or later, tap Open in Safari. You can also tap Chrome's menu (three dots), then Open in Safari if it appears.
  • In any of them, tap Copy link, open Safari and paste the link into the address bar.

iPhone: inside another app

A link opened inside another app (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, the Google app and others) opens in that app's own browser. Pleno asks you to tap the app's menu or Share icon, then Open in Safari or Open in Browser. You can also tap Copy link and paste it into Safari.

iPad: Safari

  1. Tap Share at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Add to Home Screen.
  3. Tap Add.

On an iPad the guide shows at any window size.

Android: when the browser offers to install

Chrome, Edge and Samsung Internet can offer Pleno as an app. When they do, the guide says Install Pleno: tap Install, then confirm in the browser's own prompt. If you cancel that prompt, the guide shows the steps for your browser instead.

Android: Chrome

  1. Tap the menu (three dots) at the top right.
  2. Tap Add to home screen.
  3. Tap Install.

Android: Samsung Internet

  1. Tap the menu (three lines) at the bottom right.
  2. Tap Add page to, then Home screen.
  3. Tap Add.

Android: Firefox

  1. Tap the menu (three dots).
  2. Tap Add to Home screen.
  3. Tap Add.

Android: Edge

  1. Tap the menu (three lines) at the bottom.
  2. Tap Add to phone.
  3. Tap Install.

Who can do it

Any signed-in user, residents included: everyone gets the guide and can add Pleno to their home screen. Notifications are for council members only (approval votes), so a resident's guide doesn't mention them, and only council members are asked to turn them on in the installed app.

Limits and things to know

  • The guide shows on phones at phone width (not with a phone turned sideways, when the page is wider) and on iPads at any size. It doesn't show in a desktop browser or once Pleno is installed.
  • If you open the installed app's pages (/m) in a browser tab, Continue in browser hides the guide there for your account, not just for the tab.
  • On an Android phone where Pleno is installed, the browser shares the app's sign-in and opens its pages, and the guide doesn't show. That lasts 30 days from the last time the app was opened, even if you remove it.
  • The Start here arrow points where the browser puts its menu button by default. Pleno can't see the browser's own buttons, so if you've moved the toolbar (Safari's address bar at the top, for example), look for the button the step names.
  • Some apps open links in a built-in Safari view (with Done at the top). Pleno can't tell it apart from Safari, so it shows the Safari steps. If Add to Home Screen isn't there, tap the Safari icon to open the page in Safari first.
  • Android apps that show links in their own built-in browser get no guide: open the link in Chrome.
  • On iPhone and iPad, push notifications need the installed home-screen app, not a Safari tab. Pleno asks about notifications only in the installed app, never in a browser tab.
  • If you only use a regular browser tab, you get the responsive site, not the full /m shell.
  • The first time a council member opens the mobile app, Pleno may send them a one-time email with the Safari and Chrome steps. Residents do not get it.
