Splitting a card by location

Divide one multi-location card into separate cards when the work diverges.

What it is

Sometimes one card covers several locations, then the work splits (different vendors, timelines, or decisions). Split by location creates separate cards so each location can move independently.

What you can do

From card detail, choose Split by location under the card's locations. The card keeps its first location, and Pleno creates one new card for each of its other locations, so the board stays accurate.

Each new card shows where it came from: under Dates & cost, Split from links to the original card by its number (for example MNT-041). A recurring card's next occurrence shows Previous occurrence there instead.

You can split a card again later: add locations to it, then split it again. Each split creates as many new cards as the card has locations after its first. A new card can be split in turn.

Admins (president, VP, delegated PM).

Limits and things to know

  • Splitting is for location divergence — it is not a general “duplicate card” tool.
  • A card waiting in Needs review can't be split: mark it reviewed first. A project can't be split either; add an item for each location instead.
  • An archived card can't be split, and card detail doesn't offer it: an archived card's record stays as it was. See Archiving.
  • Linked reports, documents, and approval state may not all carry over the way you expect; review the new cards after a split.
  • The card's live vendor quotes are copied onto each new card, once. Each new card's Logs say who copied each quote and from which card. A replaced quote stays with the original card as its history. See Requesting quotes and contractor conversations.
  • The new cards don't repeat. A recurring card keeps its schedule, and its next occurrence is still created when it's done. To make a new card repeat, turn on recurrence on that card.
  • If two people split the same card at the same moment (or one person in two tabs), one split goes through and the other is asked to refresh. The second split's new cards are removed.
  • A split can create as many open cards as it needs. There is no open-card limit on any plan.
